Skillset – S.C. “Luci” Lucier

Hi! I have about a decade of work experience in NYC as a production manager and director in various areas. I’ve worked as a full-time freelancer in concert dance, musical theatre, private events, corporate events, and most recently, public exhibition (the companies and shows are a long list!). The MALS program is a great space to take courses that cover a broad range of study, especially for someone that is interested in museum exhibition design and execution. After working as a site manager for the Louis Vuitton pop-up museum, in which there were a surprising amount of artifacts from the 18th-century onward, I knew it was time to revisit my undergraduate History minor and launch into the Museum field. Digital Humanities is imperative to the future of museum (or pedagogical exhibition) science, and I am eager to learn as much as I can from this experience. Anything that I don’t know how to do, I can figure out – I’m a fast learner and will put in the work to make myself useful!

Project Management

This is my strongest attribute. I’m good with managing deadlines and gently helping everyone on the team meet those deadlines. I would say that my career is basically built on professional problem solving and being a team leader. This is true even for my hobby, non-work life: I’m the captain of two different roller derby teams in NYC. One of those teams has medaled at the World Championships every year for at least the last ten years, and the other team won the NYC local championship title of 2018. If you want bridge building and common-goal achievement, I’m definitely your person.

Outreach

Very happy to fill this role in a group. I’m comfortable posting team progress and publicizing to build interest. One of my current roles is the Administrative Manager for a new museum that is being founded and built in Manhattan within the next year or two, so I am regularly discussing community engagement and the importance of outreach.

Research

Definitely happy doing research in any capacity. Academic research, obviously, but most of my career has called for more artistic research. As a director (I’ve had shows in NYMF and Fringe, etc) I create concept collections and mood boards constantly. If there is some specific type of inspiration you are looking for, I generally am pretty good at providing options that help the team identify commonality, even in the abstract realm.

Developer

I do not have much knowledge in this area outside of some easy website design. I could definitely do some supporting work with a quick explanation of the process, the task at hand, and how to complete it.

Design

The most I can contribute to this area is a proficient knowledge of Photoshop, due to studies in film/digital photography (I apprenticed under a Golden Case portrait photographer in Rhode Island for a couple of years). I also studied Sketch in undergraduate when I was completing courses in advanced Properties for theatre (I worked for Lincoln Center as a props person for a short time after college).

Note: I must be absent for class on Feb 19th. Will not miss any other classes. Happy to work remotely for that week. Will also meet outside Tuesday the week before when college is closed (Feb 12).

Kiana Skillset

Design/UX: I am particularly interested in user design. Specifically in designing physical spaces and how we want users to move through space like an installation or exhibition. That being said it would be nice to try my hand at what user experience can look like digitally. I have experience using Adobe Suite (photoshop, indesign, illustrator. I have also done some wireframing for online projects in the past.

Developer: Familiar with HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I’m no expert by any means but I know enough to get a basic site up and running. I also have some experience in game programming with p5.js which uses a mix of Processing and Javascript, as well as C programming for Arduino. I would like to sharpen my coding skills this semester.

Research:I have not done much academic research outside of research papers for undergraduate classes.

Project manager: I have not done this before, but in my job I do manage several projects at a time with competing deadlines. I’m sure there must be something transferable there. I think one of my skills lies in during a meeting taking notes, based on that voiding what the group feels is most important and helping us focus and prioritize tasks.

Outreach: I have some experience in outreach. I worked in marketing and community engagement for a couple arts organizations over the years. Last year a group of friends and I created a community workshop from start to finish.

Skillset — Rob Garfield

Development:

I have an extensive background in programming including a degree in computer game programming.  My focus was in artificial intelligence for games and simulations, so I can engineer a mean pathing algorithm and finite (or fuzzy) state machine!  The language I am most adept with is C/C++, but I have worked with a number of scripting languages including Perl, javascript, PhP and UnrealScript.  My versioning software experience started with SVN and has moved into Git.  Git is extraordinary – very excited to master it!  While I am still learning Python, I find that most of my prior experience transposes well — algorithms are algorithms, design patterns are design patterns; the learning curve is primarily API, convention and syntax.  Contemporary programming environments have so many quality of life improvements, it almost feels like cheating!

I run an extremely large multisite WordPress installation in my job, so I am quite familiar with the WP front and back ends.  I have taught workshops in WP site creation and maintenance, developed themes and (the code for) plugins, and dipped my toes into the crazy world of WP systems administration by necessity.

I plan for my Thesis project to involve developing a web application (possibly multiple applications), so I am focused on having development be my main role this semester.

Research:

I am no stranger to academic research – particularly in the area of using games and simulations in higher education classrooms.  Some years ago, I led a team which developed a social science simulation for Columbia’s Earth Institute which was incorporated into the foundational course in their new Sustainable Development program track.  This involved a significant amount of research and evaluation which led to grant proposals for further development and dissemination.

That said, I am no master either.  I feel my skills need more development in a rigorous academic environment and hope to be able to work on them extensively this semester.  I have already learned a lot from my group mates and the work all of us did last semester in Intro to DH.

Design/UX:

Design is not my forte, but I can be a solid critic of design.  I have html and css skills; and have been exposed extensively to information architecture principles through my projects.  Design is crucial in any project, for sure.  Although, I feel most comfortable in a support role in this area, I do feel confident in my ability to contribute in the areas of testing, evaluation and iteration.

Project Management:

I have been working in project management since 2002 when, with a group of colleagues, I was involved in creating a startup to develop simulations for military and educational use.  I worked as a project manager at Columbia University for five years, as well, developing game/simulation classroom interventions involving teams with sizes ranging from four to ten people.  For two years, I taught pre-production for gaming projects at the college level.  In my current position, I am also called upon to lead small teams to complete pedagogical and technical projects.

I am familiar with Gantt-chart slinging, software development philosophies and methodologies, and the delicate art of team building.  I also feel quite confident in my ability to contribute to a group — without creating friction — while helping others get the most out of themselves.

That all said, I would prefer to focus more of my time in evolving my research and development skills, acting more as support to a formal project manager.

Outreach:

My strength is in making connections with other people on a smaller scale.  For example, I work with faculty and instructors all the time and can quickly, clearly and enthusiastically engage with them around ideas and projects.  I find academics to be some of the most fascinating, usually enjoyable, people to talk to and would welcome the opportunity to work directly with DH colleagues and faculty very much.

On the flip side, I generally eschew social media and have very little experience with marketing projects to a larger audience.  I would be happy to learn more about marketing from someone who knows what they are doing, but this is definitely an area in which my skills are low.

Skills / Camilla

Skills

My background is in theater and I am still relatively new to the tech world. Actors are some of the few people left who are still working with pen and paper, but that being said I am doing my best to get up to speed within my new field. For my capstone project I will be working with animated visualizations, so editing skills and video will be skills I would be able to offer later in the semester should some of the projects involve that. In general, I would say that my strengths are on the creative and collaborative side.

Design

I have an instinct for what works well visually and would probably have a lot to offer when it came to design and the visual representation of a project. My MALS track is in data visualization and I have been diving into that since last semester, so visualizing data would be the field I have the most experience with as of now. Data collection and analysis are skills I am acquiring and eager to keep developing.

Research

Research is something I really enjoy and would love to get more experience doing. I do have the detective gene and I am good at organizing and categorizing material. I am also one of those people who enjoys working with meticulous details and databases.

Project Manager & Community Outreach

These are two roles that I don’t have much experience with but would like to learn more about. I am probably more of a team member than a leader though, and collaboration and team work is in my nature.

Developer

This would be the field where I have no experience to offer but would be more than happy to learn more about. Python has been on my list for a while and I currently at the absolute beginner level.

Skillset: Jennifer

Design/UX: I have a longtime interest in graphic design which I learn and practice mostly as a hobby with the help of online courses and websites. Comfortable with Photoshop (use it to make graphics at work), getting there with InDesign.

Developer:

  • Familiar with HTML and CSS though I have not kept up to the level of HTML5 and CSS3
  • Learning R, the programming language I’m currently focused on and looking to progress in; used it to work with Twitter and Spotify data and do simple text analysis

Research: Fact-checking news stories is one of my tasks at work so I can contribute through some of the skills I’ve picked up.

Project manager: I enjoy organizing and planning using spreadsheets and tools like Trello but in terms of managing projects for a group, I don’t have much experience there.

Outreach: I can help find relevant contacts, design graphics for social media, and help draft letters and emails but other than that, not my area of expertise.

Other skills and experience:

  • Editing texts, writing news round-ups, news curation, making visualizations using R and Tableau
  • Helped develop an informal curriculum for ESL students
  • Online tools: Mailchimp, Readymag, Splash, WordPress, Carto

Skillset: Anthony Wheeler

Hello there! I’m Anthony, a member of the recently born M.A. program in Digital Humanities. I earned my A.S. degree from Dutchess Community College (2016) and my B.S. degree from SUNY New Paltz (2018), both degrees being in Adolescence Education & English! I am currently one of the Program Assistants for the M.A. in Digital Humanities and M.S. in Data Analysis & Visualization, a HASTAC Scholars Fellow, and as of recently, I’ll be starting as an Adjunct Lecturer for the Humanities department at LaGuardia Community College this coming Spring I semester.

Skills:

Outreach:

This is definitely one of my stronger skills. For my project with Raven, we reached out to many different game scholars for assistance and guidance with developing the scope of our digital project. I also have a considerable number of people that I can contact through HASTAC and the HASTAC Scholars network. I’ve also successfully taken advantage of social media platforms, such as Twitter, to contact organizations about talking and working with them.

Developer:

I definitely consider myself to be a dabbler when it comes to development. I’ve spent a good amount of time with HTML/CSS and Python. I’ve practiced developing digital interactive maps, and I have worked closely with Twine in order to create an interactive narrative. I’ve also played with textual analysis tools and bot creation.

Project Manager:

My experience as a project manager is currently limited to my project with Raven. We shared the responsibilities that come with being a project manager since it was just the two of us. However, I am a very fast learner and am confident that I can pick up the skills needed to be an efficient solo project manager.

Designer/UX:

I don’t have much design experience outside of playing with Twine’s design, brief dabbling with Unity, and developing WordPress sites.

Research:

In the past, I have conducted extensive research in areas of gender, sexuality, and race. A lot of my papers focused on women of the Victorian era, but I have shifted gears as a grad student. My current research focuses on race, gender, sexuality, and disability in the classroom. I am currently doing research for a conference I am presenting at in May. There I will be talking about the intersection of race and disability in the classroom and how we can increase equity among students using technology.

Other Skills:

Since I spent my time in undergrad training to be a teacher, I am well-versed in different pedagogical tactics and curriculum development. I can also speak conversational Spanish.

Skillsets: Sandy Mui

First, a bit about myself: my background is in journalism and digital/digital campaigning/web projects. As a journalist, I’m predominantly a writer, but I also have a lot of experience in social media management (especially Twitter), podcasting, email newsletters, and layout for The Excelsior (Brooklyn College’s student newspaper). Currently, I intern on the digital team at Everytown for Gun Safety, where I mostly work on web projects on the back-end (lots of coding), but I’ve also written email campaigns, tested digital assets, audited webpages, and drafted social media posts.

Outreach

Probably my strongest skillset out of these categories. Since my background is in journalism, I’m constantly reaching out to people for interviews and more recently, to publications to try to freelance my stories. As mentioned above, I’ve also done a lot of work on social media and am best with Twitter.

Developer

I would consider my HTML/CSS experience “intermediate to advanced,” but I’m definitely better at HTML than CSS. I know enough to get the basic structure and design of a webpage up, but nothing too crazy. Still, much of my background in journalism/digital is in managing WordPress websites, so I have sufficient experience in this category.

Project Management

I still have a lot to learn in this category, but I’ve gotten some experience in project management at Everytown. Currently, I’m overseeing the new website for our Litigation team. I’ve also managed a couple of my own projects (one that’s close to completion, another that can be viewed here). My supervisor recently got the digital team on the project management platform Jira, which has helped greatly in outlining project management, but we’re all still fairly new to it.

Design/UX

In terms of software, I know how to use Adobe InDesign, since I use that to do layout for The Excelsior. Not much experience otherwise though.

Research

I haven’t done a lot of academic research aside from research papers for undergraduate classes, but it’s not necessarily difficult for me. Of course, I do a lot of research for journalistic articles since background information is key to many of the features I write. Depending on what’s needed at work, I’m also constantly doing a lot of research for Everytown. This is an area I wouldn’t mind contributing to if needed in a group.

Skill set: Andrea Lausevic

Hello all, I hope you are staying warm. I’m really excited to be part of this semester’s DH and contribute with my skills in bringing a socially beneficial project to  life. Here are my skills listed by the level of proficiency:

Design and UX
I hold a BA degree in Graphic Design from the University of Hertfordshire in the UK. As a designer I worked with numerous culture, art, non-profit, and education clients. I currently work at Amplify, an education platform that offers public school curriculum for K-12, as an art director. I am responsible for maintaining the current visual identity across different programs as well as concepting and creating the new ones. Some of the previous clients were Whitney museum, Brooklyn museum, UN, Girl Scouts, Action Against Hunger, Columbia GSAPP, NADA, Neue House.

I have extensive experience with designing for print, digital and web. In regards to web development, I do wireframing, prototyping, UX/UI, mobile optimization, and testing.

Software:
– Adobe CC  (design and more)
– Sketch (web design)
– Axure (wireframing)
– Figma (web design, prototyping)

You can see my work at www.andrealausevic.com

Photography

I have experience with photography (both film and digital) and photo editing. I haven’t done a lot of video work, but I think I’ll be able to deliver a solid product.

Developer

I have completed Front End development course a few years ago, but haven’t been practicing web development from scratch for a while. I’m able to edit  and understand the code (html and css), and I used many different web platforms and CMS’s (Squarespace, WordPress, Readymag, Economy, Wix).

Research

As a graduate student, I have experience in conducting academic research. I’ve been interested in looking at gender through the lens of sociological, political and philosophical theories and practices, and the implications they have on the current state of affairs. I have written papers about gender violence, the relationship between gender roles in the socialist political system (in Yugoslavia), and about female voters who helped elect Trump.

As an art director, I conduct visual research on a daily basis. I strive to remain on top of new visual trends, methods, and practices in ways people communicate.

Strategy (limited)

I worked in a firm that blended strategy and design to help leaders and organizations work more efficiently and harmoniously. I’ve collaborated closely with business strategists to design workshops and visual experiences in which the training will take place. I see using this skill in two ways, one to potentially create immersive exhibition design, and second, to help create a business or marketing plan. I am good with creating roadmaps and defining the milestones that will help the project reach its final goal.

About me

I am passionate about social justice and solving problems of gender, racial and economic inequalities in our society. I deeply believe that some of the principles of democratic socialism can potentially offer an alternative to these issues, raising the awareness of social responsibility of an individual as a part of a collective.

I’m originally from Belgrade, Serbia, but I’ve lived in China, UK, France, Morocco and now US (for the past 8 years). Meditation keeps me centered.

Skill Sets: Pamela Stemberg

Project Management:

As unsexy as keeping everyone focused and on task as project management can be, this is one of the most important aspects of any project. Without it, you are dead in the water. In one of my first  management positions, I was in charge of planning and implementing many different projects, from simple computer  upgrades to decentralization of local bank branches. These project management skills came in handy again when producing news and documentaries. I had to manage not just the field crews, but the editing and delivery of the final piece in a timely fashion (sometimes, 24 hours!).

This skill set includes: realistic goal setting, step planning to reach intermediate goals, understanding “work hours,” scheduling, coordination, research methods, managing deliverables, leadership, communication, and issues related to programming that some projects might have while others do not. I have at one time or another been employed to use all of these skills.

Outreach:

As a labor and community organizer, it’s necessary to reach out to different communities. For the PSC (CUNY’s union), I am constantly reaching out to the community to engage members in the fight for 7K and funding for CUNY. When reaching out to people, it’s important to make sure that the needs of the communities are properly assessed and that the outreach is properly guided, otherwise, the time and energy goes to naught. I’ve done well when organizing people to do show up for an action.

Developer:

I do well with WordPress, I’ve learned and forgotten Python, but that will take a few days to get up to speed if someone asked me. I wrote code in C, C++, unix shell script, and some widget code on Unix operating systems.

Design/UX:

Software includes: Adobe Premier, Photoshop, Illustrator, and most software designed for office technology.

I create Worpress websites for OER classes and have a great sense of balance when it comes to user interface.

While working in MRI Research, I created a user interface to make accessing UNIX tools more intuitive for researchers and MDs.

Research:

An important skill to have in almost any profession, but I use this skill everyday as a teacher of research and writing.

Skill-set: Brittany A. Hamilton

Hey all! I hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend. Below I added the necessary skill-sets and a little bit about my background which I think could be helpful.

The Basics:

Education

MA in Women’s and Gender Studies, DePaul University

BS in Secondary Education: English and Communications, Penn State University

Current Work

Curriculum Mapping Specialist, CUNY School of Medicine

Freelance Blogger

Skills:

Outreach:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn
  • Glassdoor
  • Hootsuite
  • Hubspot
  • WordPress
  • Google Analytics

This is one of my strongest skill-sets. During my time at DePaul University, I worked part-time for the Women and Gender Studies department as their social media assistant coordinator (primarily running their Facebook page). After I graduated from DePaul, I worked in Digital Marketing for a little over 3 months at a startup in Chicago. I ran all their social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, Instagram, etc.). Additionally, I wrote blog posts for SEO management for both blogs within the start-up (B2B and B2C directed) which were housed in WordPress. Next, I took a job as the Education and Training Specialist for the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, The University of Chicago. In addition to developing education and programming including real-time and recorded web events (e.g., webinars and webcasts), online courses, self-study materials, instructor-led training and live educational programs at meetings and conferences, I also worked to promote the Alliance’s clinical trials through implementing social media campaigns that utilized Hootsuite to increase member engagement, boost study accrual, and raise overall awareness of clinical cancer research and trials. For the last three years I have/continue to write blog content for a variety of companies including Sittercity, Multicultural Consulting Services, and Lu Rocha Counseling.  I would be a great asset to any team looking to make their project produce a high outreach using social media and blog content.

Project Manager:

  • Asana (Project Management App)
  • Google Apps
  • Cvent (Event Planning Software)

This is another of my strong skill-sets. During my various professional roles, I have utilized Asana, a project management app, to successfully manage and complete projects with several different team members. During my time as a graduate student at DePaul, I worked with colleagues to submit collaborative proposals to conferences, and once accepted, write and present collaborative work (check my LinkedIn page for more information on my collaborative conference presentations and workshops).  I am excellent at organizing work in order to complete all projects in a timely manner (feel free to ask to see my personal Google calendar, it’s one of my proudest working achievements haha). I work well collaborating with others and as a leader. I enjoy working with people, managing tasks, creating timelines, and helping to make a final project become a reality.  I feel that I would fit very well into this role in any project.

Designer/UX:

  • Adobe Captivate
  • Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (some skills, would be interested in further developing)
  • Moodle (Open Source, LMS)
  • LCMS+ (LMS)

This is a more limited skill-set for me. I have built some WordPress blogs in the past (mostly for personal use). Professionally, I have used Adobe Captivate and QuickTime to create and design online learning modules and various educational YouTube content. I have some limited skills in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator that I would be interested in developing a bit further. I have done some limited work designing in Moodle and currently work LCMS+ (but I do minimal design/developing within the system). I could definitely help with some aspects of design and would be open to taking this role on in a partial manner.

Developer:

I don’t really have any programming/developer skill-sets and, to be honest, I am not particularly interested in developing this skill further within the breadth of this class. I find programming/developing very interesting, however for the sake of this class and the project I will be working on, I would not be interested/advise having me into this role.

Research:

Particularly interested/well versed on the topics below:

  • Feminist (Intersectional) Theory
  • Feminist Pedagogy
  • Popular Education/Critical Pedagogy
  • Alternative Education
  • Social Justice/Activism
  • Oncology (Limited)
  • Medical School Curriculum

Based on my previous and current academic and work experience, research is definitely a strong skill-set of mine. I currently work within the Research and Evaluation department of the CUNY School of Medicine, so research is a dominant aspect of my daily professional life and something I feel very comfortable taking on. In the past, I have contributed to a variety of research projects (both my own research and others research) and have completed my MA in Women’s and Gender Studies (as noted above). Last semester, in lieu of a project proposal, I submitted an exploratory research paper. I would most definitely be interested in contributing to this role in a partial or complete capacity.

For more information about my skills, publications, conference work and previous professional roles, please feel free to connect with me or check out my LinkedIn page!
